I Am What I Believe I Am

Shifting the mindset is hard!

Years ago I started writing songs and messing around on my guitar, always thinking, “There’s no way I could really make music.”

I would tell myself I’m not a musician because I have no experience or formal training.

Despite those beliefs, I told myself I can be a musician if I want to be.

I am what I believe I am.

This has applied to everything in my life. Changing the self-talk, one thought at a time:

I’m not a performer. I am a performer!

I’m not smart. I am smart!

I’m not good enough. I am good enough!

With each negative, false story I tell myself, I try my hardest to rewrite it and tell myself what I want to believe I am.

And over time, the more I say it, the more I’ll truly believe it.

This past month has been more powerful than ever as I’ve started to really believe in myself.

I’ve been practicing singing (performing in a competition for the first time ever), I’ve been working on my novel and reading books, I’ve been making music and producing my own originals, I’ve been maintaining my  workout and nutrition routine, and so on.

Months ago I would say negative thoughts to myself like:

I’m not actually a real singer.

I’m not actually a real writer.

I’m not actually a music producer.

However, by taking action and correcting my thoughts, I’ve been feeling the shift where I am actually believing myself now.

I am a singer.

I am a writer.

I am a music producer.

I believe I am these things and I have become them.

It's taken years of shifting this mindset, but the biggest movement for me began at the end of last year when I committed to a group of friends–each of us proclaiming our goals for this year.

I said I wanted to finish writing my novel, make my own original music, and perform my music.

Stating that openly to people (and even recording myself saying it) has held me accountable and encouraged me to truly become these things.

During that time last year, I wrote the song I Am What I Believe I Am. It came out of me in one go, like I was proclaiming to myself that from this point moving forward, I have to change my self-talk and truly believe the positive affirmations I tell myself.

Shortly after that, my friend Jamar recommended Mirror Work by Louise Hay. I’ve been making my way through this, taking much more than the 21 days to complete it (everyone takes their own time with it), but it is helping improve my self-talk too.

All of this is going hand-in-hand and resulting in some powerful work!

Three months ago I started a music production course with a wonderful musician, Arula, and I have grown tremendously! I am really becoming the music producer I’ve wanted to be.

I can proudly say that all this has come together for me to take this song I wrote five months ago and over this past month, I turned it into a real, produced track!

The song goes:

I’m a little limited in what I can do

If I tell that to myself

Or I’m expansive, as big as I want to be

If I tell myself that’s what I am

I am what I believe am

So why not tell myself that I’m the greatest there’s ever been

If I believe what I believe that I am

I could tell myself I’m weak

I could tell myself I’m insecure

Or I can tell myself I’m strong and reassured

I believe that I believe I am

Talented and special

And perfectly imperfect the way I am

I am what I believe am

So why not tell myself that I’m the greatest there’s ever been

If I believe what I believe that I am

I believe… I believe I am

Why not believe in myself and all possibility

If I believe

I believe that I believe in myself

I am what I believe am

So why not tell myself that I’m the greatest there’s ever been

If I believe what I believe that I am

I am so proud of where my song is going and feel like it’s close to being done.

I’ll share the progress I’m making and one day will launch this original!

Thank you for reading, and may you continue to believe in yourself and all possibilities!
